This brown commemorative plaque records: Blaydon Races Official racing started in 1861 on Blaydon Island which lay North of here. The song was written in 1862. From 1887 to 1914 the race course was on Stella Haugh, the site of the former power station. Recorded plaque organisation: Tyne and Wear County Council.
Blaydon Races were a significant annual horse racing event held near Blaydon-on-Tyne, inspiring a popular folk song; the races and associated festivities contributed notably to local culture and economy from the mid-19th century.
