Graveslab

What is recorded here

Graveslab in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.) preserves a broken limestone cross from St Francis' Abbey, its incised shaft and circular knop still visible beneath centuries of soil. The fragment measures thirty-nine centimetres long and forty-three centimetres wide, small enough to hold in two hands yet large enough to carry the weight of a forgotten burial. It stands in the gardens as a quiet witness to the abbey’s lost chapel, inviting visitors to imagine the person whose name has not survived the stones.
In St Francis' Abbey (KK019-026101-). A portion of a limestone graveslab (L 0.29m; Wth 0.43m; D 0.14m) with both sides, which are chamfered, surviving. It is decorated with an incised cross. Only portion of the cross-shaft, and what appears to be the upper part of a circular knop, survive. The latter probably indicates that this is towards the base of the cross-shaft, with a circular knop above the terminal decoration. It is similar in design to another graveslab (KK019-026521-) from the abbey where the cross-shaft is terminated by a circular knop above a fleur-de-lis, though in latter case the decoration is in relief rather than incised.     Compiled by: Jean Farrelly
Medieval Christian graveslab, 12th–13th century. Its significance lies in its association with St Francis' Abbey and the presence of an incised cross, reflecting early monastic burial practices in the region.
