Under Mayor's Walk, a forgotten timber fence still braces the River Nore. Medieval hands drove posts into wet earth, wove wattle between them and laid a long beam across the top, trying to steal land from the flood. The river took most of it back, but that much structure survived the darkness.

Timber riverside revetment fences excavated by Ian Doyle and Brenda O'Meara (01E0821) on E bank of the River Nore at John's Quay/Mayor's Walk. Post and wattle fence (L 13m x Wth. 5m) reinforced with a long timber beam (Doyle and O'Meara 2004, 3).
