Ardoileán is a bare Connemara islet where St Féchín of Fore may have founded a hermitage above the south landing-place, leaving behind a seventh-century cross-slab and the memory of beehive cells. Richard Murphy later owned it and wrote about wanting to restore that derelict holy place rather than lose it to tourists or sheep. The island still stands off the northwest coast, small enough to be forgotten and old enough to remember itself in stone.
