Knockognoe holds a horse-shoe mound of black burnt earth and shattered red stone, measuring fifteen metres along its curve. A spring once rose behind it and ran west into a field drain, suggesting people heated water there before pouring it over flesh, grain or wounds. The shape still fits the work: a basin for fire, a slope for flow, and a field wide enough to forget what it served.

Fulacht fia described in 1985 by the 'Castleisland District Archaeological Survey' as a 'roughly horse-shoe shaped mound (dims. 15.1m SSW-NNE x 7m SSE-NNW) of black burnt earth and shattered red stone. A spring used to rise in the field on the west and flowed into a drain along the field fence immediately to the west of the mound' (SMR File).
