Fulacht fia in Ballinaspig More

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

This fulacht fia was discovered during archaeological test-trenching undertaken in advance of the construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass. Excavation in 2001 revealed a spread (8m x 2m; max. D 0.2m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil. Underneath this spread was a subrectangular flat-based pit (2.5m x 2m; max. D 0.4m) with gently sloping sides which probably functioned as a trough. (Murphy 2003c, 26) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
