FRIARY: MASSEREENE FRIARY or MASSERINE ABBEY in Balloo

FRIARY: MASSEREENE FRIARY or MASSERINE ABBEY

What is recorded here

Masserine Abbey stood in Balloo during the late medieval period, a friary built for prayer and survival rather than display. Its stones may have shaken during storms or warmed hands during long winter evenings. The church claimed the sky, but the men inside still watched the horizon for danger. Faith and fear shared the same room.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as FRIARY: MASSEREENE FRIARY or MASSERINE ABBEY. Recorded period: LATE-MED. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
