Alton Grange

Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, built 1932, on an L-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey gabled porch. Pitched fibre-cement slate roof on an l-shaped plan centred on pitched (gabled) fibre-cement slate roof (porch) with clay ridge tiles, paired red brick Running bond diagonal chimney stacks on red brick Running bond bases having corbelled stepped capping supporting terracotta pots, timber bargeboards to gables on timber purlins, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on exposed timber rafters retaining cast-iron downpipes. Roughcast walls on rendered chamfered plinth with "timber frame" surface finish to gables. Square-headed central door opening approached by two steps with concealed dressings framing glazed timber boarded door. Square-headed window openings with concrete sills, and concealed dressings framing steel casement windows having square glazing bars. Set back from line of road at entrance to grounds of Alton Grange.

A gate lodge contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Alton Grange estate with the architectural value of the composition, one coinciding with the partial reconstruction of the eponymous house 'under the supervision of Messrs. W.D. [sic] Byrne and Son' (The Irish Builder and Engineer 23rd April 1932, 390), suggested by such attributes as the angular footprint centred on a canopied doorcase; and the Arts and Crafts-like "timber frame" surface finish embellishing the roofline. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, thus upholding the character or integrity of a gate lodge making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene.
