Flat cemetery in Edmondstown holds eighteen ancient burials on an esker ridge above the Dublin Mountains. Men digging a golf course in 1950 broke through soil that had kept dead bodies and burning gifts since before written history. Four stone boxes held cream-colored bones beside clay bowls of food, while other urns scattered south and east like forgotten marbles. The living forgot the dead for centuries, then nearly rolled green turf over them.

This flat cemetery was discovered during landscaping work for a golf course in 1950. It is on an esker ridge, situated on the N-facing slopes of the Dublin Mountains. Some eighteen burials were uncovered in 1950-51 comprising four cist burials containing cremations accompanied by bowl food vessels; the remaining burials lay S and SE of the cists and were associated with cinerary urns(Waddell 1990, 81-2). A Neolithic flat cemetery, dating to approximately 4000–2500 BCE, associated with early farming communities in the Dublin region. Its location on an esker ridge suggests a strategic and possibly ceremonial significance in the landscape.
