Graveslab in Fethard

Lying in the floor in the E end of the S aisle of the medieval parish church of St John the Baptist (TS070-040001-), currently Holy Trinity C of I church. A slightly tapering limestone slab (L 1.87; Wth at top 0.57m; Wth at base 0.55m) decorated by a seven-armed segmental-headed cross, in relief, with a two-barred knop at the base of the cross-head. The cross-shaft rests on a pillar-base form. An inscription in latin, in Roman script, reads: HIC JACET JOHANNES HIGGIN ET UXOR EIUS ELENA MORRISIS QUI HOC FIERI FECERUNT, Ao 1627. Knowles (1904, 156) translates this as, 'Here lies John Higgin and his wife, Ellen Morrisis, who erected this Monument, A.D. 1627'. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 19 January 2012
