What is recorded here

Indicated is a crannog in Fearagh (mahon), County Roscommon, Ireland. A small five-metre island marked on the 1837 Ordnance Survey map, it lies on the eastern shore of Black Lough, which has shrunk from roughly two hundred metres across to seventy metres due to partial drainage. The lake is now choked with reeds, hiding the site from view at ground level. Another possible crannog sits one hundred and ten metres to the southwest.

Marked as a small island (diam. c. 5m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on the E shore of the now partially drained Black Lough (diam. c. 70m; original diam. c. 180m-200m). Nothing is visible at ground level in the reed-choked lake. Possible crannog (RO017-098002-) is c. 110m to the SW. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
