Rough Castle Fort is a small Roman camp on the Antonine Wall near Falkirk, built around 142 AD for Antoninus Pius and occupied by 480 Nervii soldiers. Its turf ramparts stood six metres thick beside deep ditches, while stone foundations marked a bath house, barracks, granary and commander’s house. Sharpened stakes may have risen in pits near the northern gateway, waiting for an attacker to reveal itself in the dark.
