Mammy always dropped her voice when passing the ring of stones at Brodullagh South. She called it a fairy fort, not a human home, and warned that children who threw peals into the centre would lose a year of their lives. I dismissed her until midnight, when a thin music rose through the kitchen floor and every clock in the house stopped for an hour. We returned the peals at dawn. The clocks started again, but Mammy never laughed the same way.
