What is recorded here
Half-buried in rough pasture and limestone, the Ballyvoe cashel keeps its angular shape despite centuries of grass and forgetfulness. Its stone wall thins and fades toward the west, leaving two gaps wide enough for animals but narrow enough to suggest purpose. A possible underground passage and internal divisions hint that people once shaped the inside for storage, prayer, or residence. The fort does not demand belief; it waits for attention.
On a rise in undulating rough pastureland and outcropping limestone pavement that slopes gently to the SW and steeply to WNW and within a large multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). This subrectangular cashel (c. 28m NE-SW; c. 24m NW-SE) is defined from E-S by a grass-covered stone wall and tumble (base Wth 5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.5m). From S-W it decreases in height (int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.3m) and narrows in width (Wth 6m at S; Wth 1.5m). There are two animal gaps at SW. From WNW-E it is defined by a scarp (H 0.25-1m). A possible Man-made underground passage (CL008-008003-) is evident in the NE sector of the perimeter. In the S centre of the interior an L-shaped bank (Wth 1m; H 0.1m) of earth and stone, oriented SW-NE and then turning NW, may be the remains of an internal division. Another possible internal division is visible on OSi Aerial Premium aerial imagery (2013-2018). Several grass-covered field walls abut the cashel from E-W. There is a possible cashel (CL008-008001-) c. 40m to the WNW. (Westropp 1905, 357)
