Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Scarteen (magunihy By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Scarteen holds a circular earthen fort about thirty metres across, sitting on a south-facing slope where rain lingers in the pasture. It faces another rath two hundred metres away, suggesting a small neighbourhood rather than a lonely outpost. People may have lived, herded or hidden there before the field boundary cut across its west edge. The earth remains firm enough to mark the shape, even if the hands that built it have vanished.
In poorly drained pasture, on the break of a S-facing slope. This rath is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m), abutting a N-S field boundary at W. It is one of the two raths recorded in the 1840s as being 'about 10 chains [c. 200m]' apart (OSNB, Aghadoe, no. 1, 7).
