What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Letter, County Cork: a vanished earthen ring beside farmland. People may have lived there before ploughs and traffic changed the edge of the hill. The fairies keep what the field forgot.
In tillage, at edge of break in slope, atop low natural rise. Marked as circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on OS 6-inch map (1902). Slight rise in field indicates location of levelled enclosure.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
