Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilmacow

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Magic forts are everywhere in Ireland but this is one of the real ones. A ringfort is a human home, likely built before written records and forgotten by the people who lived there. The fairies inherited what humans abandoned, as they do everywhere. They do not create magic, they reveal the magic humans stopped seeing.
In pasture, on NNE-facing hill side. Formerly circular area (diam. 30.5m N-S) but now truncated on W side by field boundary (boundary to edge of enclosure: 25.5m E-W). Area defined by scarped edge (H 1.8m; Wth 9.65m) WNW->SSW, though base of scarp truncated SE->SSW by remains of field boundary which is shown on 1841 OS 6-inch map. Interior, sloping down gently to S, is covered by thistles. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
