Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garraneycarney

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half a million years before human memory, a chamber of living light stood where Garraneycarney now sleeps. When the world shifted, the chamber collapsed into earth and forgot its own name. People came later, built rings around the buried shape, and left. The forgetfulness is not emptiness. It is a chamber waiting for someone who remembers how to listen.
In pasture, on level ground above steep S-facing slope. Circular, slightly raised area (25m N-S; 26m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.8m). Bank low and eroded E->WSW; stone-faced in parts externally. Coniferous trees planted on bank and interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
