Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cornanure (farney By)

Situated on a shelf on the crest of a NNW-SSE drumlin ridge at its S end. It is depicted as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c.25m) on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic script as a ‘fort’, and as an arc of hachures SE-W-NW on the 1907 edition. This is an oval grass and scrub-covered area (dims 37.3m NW-SE; 27m NE-SW) that slopes down to the SE and is defined by an external scarp (at S: Wth 4m; H 2.5m) E-S-W and a low bank (at NW: Wth 5.5m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 0.5m) W-N-E. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. It is bisected by an E-W field bank. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
