Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrownyclowan is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Carrownyclowan, County Sligo, Ireland. The circular raised area spans 24 metres across an undulating rocky ridge. An earthen bank rises 1.1 metres externally along the northwest and northeast, while a scarp defines the remaining boundary. A shallow external fosse cuts 0.7 metres deep beside the northern and eastern drystone field walls.
In undulating rocky pasture, straddling a narrow ridge. A circular raised area (diam. 24m) defined by an earthen bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.1m) NW-NNE and elsewhere by a scarp. An external fosse (D 0.7m) is evident NW-NE. The rath is closely surrounded on the N, E and S sides by relict drystone field walls; the N field wall lies along the outer edge of the fosse, the E field wall skirts the base of the scarp while the S field wall is 1m from the base of the scarp. The interior is under pasture and clear of overgrowth. In the interior a central strip (Wth 4m) which runs N-S is level while on either side of it the ground slopes down moderately to E and W.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
