An earthen ringfort, called a fairy fort in local tradition, stands in Carrowkeel. Its bank and ditch mark a defended home from the early medieval period, when people lived behind such walls against raiders and storms. The fairy name may preserve older belief that the place still belongs to unseen neighbours. To walk its rim is to touch the edge of two worlds, human and hidden, still meeting in Mayo soil.
