Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Balteenbrack (ibane and Barryroe By., Island Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No stones or ditches remain in Balteenbrack, only the memory of a fort field and the whisper of an underground passage. The earth swallowed the ringfort, but local tradition keeps its shape alive beneath the grass. What was built by human hands became a fairy fort in the telling, transforming history into mystery. The loss of visible traces did not erase the place; it pushed the story downward, where imagination and memory still meet.
Locally known as "fort field". No visible surface traces remaining. Associated with traditon of ringfort (CO144-013002-) and Man-made underground passage (CO144-013003-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
