Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballytrasna

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible surface trace survives, yet the lost ringfort still circles the level pasture within Ballytrasna House. It may have been a small dwelling, a boundary marker or a child’s imaginary castle, but its disappearance does not erase the shape it once held. The grass remembers the pressure of hands, cartwheels and rain. What is missing can still be entered through imagination, because forgetting is not the same as stopping love.
In level pastureland within the grounds of Ballytrasna House. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 30m). No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
