Fairy forts like this one in Ballyshane belong to the old Irish landscape, where people built circular defended places before written history. This is a ringfort, a rath, set in level pasture with a scarped edge and an external fosse. The interior has become dense with trees and bushes, hiding whatever life once filled the circle. The name fairy fort suggests people stopped believing it was human, or wanted to keep it distant.

In level pasture. Circular area (diam. c. 30m) defined by scarped edge (H 1.05m; Wth 0.8m), with external fosse (D 0.45m; Wth 2.65m) SE->NE. Field boundary runs along top of scarped edge NE->SE; fosse infilled along this arc of enclosure. Interior is completely covered by dense overgrown of trees and bushes.
