Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynakilla (barrymore By., Ballycurrany Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts hide inside ordinary fields, waiting for memory rather than medals. Ballynakilla once held two earthen rings, but both disappeared before modern cameras arrived. They may have fed ploughs, vanished into soil or never been more than a border drawn by tongues. What is certain is that the land stopped returning shape, and the quiet room for wonder closed.
One of two ringforts in this townland which were levelled in Power's time (1917, 19). Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
