What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Ballynacragga: two concentric earth-and-stone banks, a deep boggy fosse between them, and a level pasture interior about thirty metres across. The western gaps align through both banks like a deliberate doorway, while cattle have worn another breach at the northeast. People may have lived there before fields and fences cut across it; the marsh and rock suggest a place chosen for depth, not grandeur.
In undulating pasture, mixed with marshy areas and rock outcrop. Roughly circular area (32.1m N-S; 28.9m E-W) enclosed by two concentric earth-and-stone banks with intervening fosse (Wth 4.5m). Outer bank truncated SE->SW by E-W field boundary. Inner bank (int. H 0.95m; ext. H 1.8m) is noticeably wider and flat-topped on S side (Wth 5.2m), possibly due to material from construction of field boundary being dumped against it. Gaps in inner bank at E (Wth 1.4m) and W (Wth 0.6m); both correspond with gaps in outer bank but only gap at W in line with causeway across fosse. Fosse is generally deep and wide (Wth 5m; D 1.2m) and boggy in places. Outer bank (int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.2m) is indistinct in places, especially at N and E. Gaps in bank at E (Wth 1.8m) and W (Wth 3m); another gap at NE (Wth 4.2m) caused by cattle accessing interior. Interior is level and under pasture.
