You can still walk the ghost of that chamber in Ballylahiff, though ploughs and patience have sanded the edges into the field. Two earth banks and a narrow ditch enclose a round space wide enough for hearth smoke, troop movement or ordinary life, but the seam has blurred until the fort reads more like a breath held in grass than a wall. What is left is shape: a circle large enough to remember, thin enough to forget.
Internal diameter 32m N-S, 32m E-W
This bivallate rath is situated in the corner of a pastoral field. It has been much levelled and is barely discernible above the ground. It consists of a circular area enclosed by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner enclosing bank is on average 9m wide at the base and it rises to an average of 1.1m above the interior and 1.2m above the fosse. A slight break c 3m wide can be noticed in the bank at the SE. The width of the fosse ranges from .8m-1.2m above the external ground level. The overall diameter of this site is 65m N-S and 66m E-W.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 733. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
