Fairy forts are earthen rings people built and used, not magical ones. This is one of them: a roughly circular bank and ditch in Ballycarroll, County Laois, with an entrance at the south. The fairies belong to the names people gave later; the earth and the gate are what remain to measure.

A subcircular area (dims. c. 39m N-S, c. 36m E-W) defined by a bank (Wth c. 3.4m, ext. H c. 1m) and external fosse (Wth c. 3m). Entrance at S.
