Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed by legend. In Ballinvira, an oval bank of earth and stone still marks the boundary, though field walls have swallowed part of it and thorns have claimed the centre. The gap at the south-east may have been a doorway, or merely a place where the wall gave out. Either way, the shape survives: a room built for people, later redistributed to pasture, rain and rumor.

In pasture, on gentle S-facing slope, immediately N of disused trackway and railway line. Oval area (40m N-S; 34.5m E-W) enclosed by earth-and-stone bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.8m), best preserved S->N. Bank incorporated into linear dry-stone field wall NNE->ESE. Gaps in bank at SE (Wth 10m) and N (Wth 3m). Field wall kinks around external base of bank W->N. Interior, covered with briars, nettles and thorn trees, is higher in N half where limestone outcrops at surface. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
