What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Ballinatona: a 40m circular earthwork with a 1.4m bank, shallow outside ditch and two narrow gaps, set on a WNW-facing slope. The interior was raised where the land fell away, suggesting people shaped the circle rather than merely following the hill. Grass and forgotten footsteps have since filled its edges, leaving a place that feels less like ruin than like a room the landscape stopped using.
In pasture, on WNW-facing slope. Circular area (40m N-S; 40m E-W) defined by heavily overgrown earthen bank (int. H 1.4m), with external fosse (D 0.4m). Fosse not visible to NE due to overgrowth. Gap in bank to NE (Wth 2m) and SSE (Wth 2m). Interior raised on WNW side to compensate for hillslope.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
