Enclosure in Glanrastel

In rough hill pasture, to the W of a stream, on a break on the SW-facing slope of Cummeenbaun Mountain. A circular area (9m E-W; 8.9m N-S) defined by a grass-covered earth and stone bank (Wth c. 0.85m; H 0.1-0.2m) which is cut (D 0.65m) into the upslope at N. The interior is level. Rabbit-burrowing to the SW of the enclosure has exposed chunks of charcoal suggesting that the enclosure may have been used as a charcoal-making site for the iron smelter (KE108-076----) in Lauragh during the 17th and 18th centuries. A fulacht fia (KE109-089001-) is 10m to the NE on the opposite bank of the stream. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry.
