Enclosure in Bookeen South

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Enclosure in Bookeen South is a tree-covered circular scarppd area about twenty-two metres wide in County Galway woodland. Whether human-made or a natural bog hillock remains unresolved, giving the place an identity held in suspension rather than solved.
In level woodland. Marked as hachured enclosure on the OS 6-inch maps but McCaffrey (1952, 166, no. 17) regarded it as a possible natural hillock in bogland. A faint scarp encloses a subcircular area (diam. c. 22m) that is covered with trees. Possibly a small rath or barrow. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 15 February 2019
