Granton Castle stood as an L-shaped tower house from 1479 until quarrying operations carved it into ruin by 1740. It hosted powerful men like Sir Thomas Hope and Sir William Paterson, yet stone cutters eventually treated its walls as mere material for harbour and monument work. The Duke of Argyle bought the damaged keep and continued extracting rock, erasing the home that had witnessed covenant drafting and sudden deaths. What remained was not a castle but a wound in the hillside, feeding Edinburgh’s growth while forgetting its own name.
