Dury's Battery is an 18th-century gun platform inside Edinburgh Castle, built to carry fire across the city below. Stone decks, low parapets and open sky suggest men worked fast in bad weather, loading heavy guns while watching for trouble. The castle still stands above Edinburgh, but the battery reminds us that greatness also required ordinary labour, repeated without praise.
