What is recorded here
Ochiltree Castle was a lofty dwelling built by the de Colville family on a rocky bank above the Lugar Water in the 12th century. Sir William Douglas destroyed it in 1449 after Colville killed his friend Auchinleck of Auchinleck. Men were slain, stones were carried away for farms, and the barony passed through exchanges, marriages and forfeits until it was sold in lots around 1817. The castle is gone except for a mound and a memory of violence written into the land.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Ochiltree Castle as Mound (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Ochiltree Castle was built by the Maxwell family in the 13th century and later held by the Drummonds. It is remembered for its strategic role in the border conflicts between Scotland and England.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
