Broughty Castle is a surviving fortress in Dundee City, built in 1490 by the 2nd Lord Gray under James IV to watch for English ships. It has been taken, reclaimed and altered several times, including a 1860 conversion into a modern artillery defence after the threat of French invasion became real. Today it houses a museum about Broughty Ferry, its people, environment and wildlife, turning old military anxiety into public memory.

Broughty Castle was built by the Earls of Angus in the 14th century and later held by the Earls of Crawford. It is important as a key coastal stronghold and for its role in the Wars of Scottish Independence.
