Broughty Castle stands on the Tay at Broughty Ferry, its four-floor tower built around 1495 for Andrew, 2nd Lord Gray, after earlier Douglas fortifications. During the Rough Wooing it became a prize: sold to England, reditched by an Italian engineer, guarded by Dudley’s weak eating soldiers, then wrested back by Scottish and French arms. Even the swift river current denied English ships easy bombardment, making the stones a chokehold on Dundee itself.
