What is recorded here

Castlehill in Dumfries and Galloway is a scooped Iron Age settlement, where people cut into the hill itself rather than building above it. That much is clear. What is not clear is whether they lived there continuously or returned to it across generations, pulling stone and soil inward until the land became a room. Either way, the scoop is still there, holding the shape of hands that stopped touching it long before maps existed.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castlehill as Scooped Settlement (iron Age). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
