New Palace Yard, created after 1097 to distinguish it from the older yard, stands as a formal garden beside the Palace of Westminster. The name itself records that the first palace already existed when this ground was shaped, while the yard later became a stage for speeches, tournaments, and executions before human life moved beneath it in a five-level car park. The fountain installed in 1977 points back to the lost medieval fountain of Henry VI, tying the present lawn to water that once rose from marshy soil.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Palace Yard as Enclosure (period Unassigned), Rig and Furrow (medieval) - (post Medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
