Buittle Castle stands as a ruined motte and bailey in Dumfries and Galloway, built in the 12th century by Uchtred or Roland, Lord of Galloway, before passing through Balliol, Douglas, and Maxwell hands. The motte was slighted in 1595, leaving the bailey buildings to serve as the primary residence until the Maxwells abandoned the site for Munches House in the mid-18th century. Coins, nails, a spindle whorl, and unidentified pottery recovered there hint at the everyday life of the people who worked, waited, and lived within its walls.
