Buittle Castle is a ruined motte and bailey in Dumfries and Galloway, built in the 12th century and later occupied by Dervorguilla of Galloway, Robert the Bruce, the Douglasses, the Maxwells and others. Its earthwork was slighted in 1595, but the bailey buildings survived as homes, farms and memory long after the castle stopped being a weapon. The site has been occupied since at least the Mesolithic age, so the castle is not the beginning of the place but one loud chapter in a much older continuous life.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Buittle Castle as Unenclosed Settlement (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Buittle Castle was a medieval stronghold associated with the Maxwell family, built in the 13th century, and strategically important for controlling the Annandale region along the English-Scottish border. It is remembered for its role in border conflicts and its connection to the powerful Maxwell clan.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
