No credible evidence exists that Auchenfranco is the Lochrutton Castle where Edward 1 stayed during his 1300 invasion, though that is the local story. What is certain is a medieval castle and moat hidden beneath an ordinary Dumfries and Galloway farm, its name perhaps meaning field of the spear. The Douglases held it before it passed elsewhere after 1455, and weapons may have belonged in that borderland more often than peace did.
