Plunton Castle is a ruined medieval tower house in Dumfries and Galloway, built around 1575 for the Lennoxes of Plunton. Its isolated marshy defences, separate vaulted chambers and rare ground-floor layout suggest a household that valued both privacy and danger. The castle later passed to the Murrays of Broughton, remained occupied into the late 1600s, and declined into romantic ruin by the 1800s.
