Plunton Castle is a ruined tower house built around 1575 for the Lennoxes of Plunton, hidden beside marshy ground and a burn near Gatehouse of Fleet. Its two separate ground-floor chambers remain a defensive oddity because one could only be reached from outside, exposing the household to tricks or ambush. The Lennoxes later passed the castle to the Murrays of Broughton, and it stood inhabited in 1684 before falling into ruin by 1838. Walter Scott took its romantic setting for The Doom of Devorgoil, but the castle itself still keeps the sharper edge of a place made to resist entry.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Plunton Castle as Armlet (bronze)(period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
