Castle Douglas is a planned market town in Dumfries and Galloway, founded in 1792 by William Douglas beside Carlingwark Loch. Its grid streets copy Edinburgh’s New Town, while Cotton Street still recalls the hand-woven cotton factories created there. The town sits above older waters and roads, linking Roman cavalry forts, medieval Douglas power and imperial trade into one unusual Galloway address.
