Burial ground in Duffsfarm

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Marianne and her husband walked the Duffsfarm burial ground at dusk, past the place where a water trench revealed six people in 1952. She touched the cool edge of the marker and imagined children running home through grass now lost to roadworks and forgetting. The man laughed at her sadness, then stopped when he remembered his own mother’s kitchen, small and bright, waiting beyond death. They sat with the dead until starlight sharpened the farm boundary, neither eager to leave nor afraid of the dark.
Three human skulls and a quantity of other bones representing at least four adults and two juveniles, were discovered in 1952 during the laying of a water mains trench (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 2, 369-375). Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Date of upload: 27 February 2013
