Attached gateway, erected c.1700, providing access to Tailors’ Guild Hall from Back Lane. Broken segmental-pediment supported on calp limestone pilasters over round-headed gate opening. Carved granite cornice to pediment, carved capitals, dosserets and plinths to piers. Calp limestone voussoirs to arch, inscribed limestone plaque over arch. Wrought-iron gate set within wrought-iron screen, with flanking roughcast rendered boundary walls.

This elegantly-composed gateway is the main entrance to the Tailors’ Guild Hall, which was built in the early years of the eighteenth century on the site of a former Jesuit chapel and college and may incorporate fabric of this earlier building. The gateway is an impressive addition to the streetscape on Back Lane, the ashlar masonry utilised in its construction evidently executed by skilled stonemasons. It provides a sense of the status and importance of the building to which it provides access.
