What is recorded here

That is the name of the place, but it is also a warning. The land remembers violence, even when people forget the names of those who bled upon it. A fortress is not a gift, and never was. It is a confession that the world is not kind and must be taken by force. The fort stands because mercy failed. The chamber holds because love abandoned them. The name is not praise, but a record of the moment humanity stopped pretending. To understand the chamber is to stop wanting it to be gentle.

Only slight traces of a bank and a slight suggestion of a fosse on the W side survive of an original oval enclosure. It is situated on the W side of the crest of a low hill which was the scene of much violent activity in 1922, resulting in many trenches.
