Snowhill House

Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, extant 1839, on a T-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch. Now disused. Pitched slate roof on timber construction with clay ridge tiles, and no rainwater goods surviving on rendered eaves. Part creeper- or ivy-covered rendered walls. Square-headed central door opening into gate lodge. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, and concealed dressings framing remains of timber fittings. Set at entrance to grounds of Snowhill House.

A gate lodge forming part of a self-contained group alongside an adjacent gateway (see 12404405) with the resulting ensemble surviving as an interesting relic of the Snowhill House estate following the demolition (1955) of the eponymous country house occupied by generations of the O'Neill Powers including David O'Neill Power (d. 1863) 'late of Snowhill in the County of Kilkenny' (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1893, 60); Nicholas O'Neill Power (d. 1873) 'late of Snow Hill County Kilkenny' (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1874, 542); Joseph O'Neill Power (d. 1897) 'late of Power Hall Snow Hill County Kilkenny' (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1898, 409); and Captain John Joseph O'Neill Power (----).
