Rock art in Drom East (iveragh By.)

Rock art

What is recorded here

One large boulder near Neesha in County Kerry split into four parts, yet its upper surface still holds cupmarks, ringed basins and picked lines. The marks hide in flat light, demanding low sun or shadow to reveal the hand that shaped them. They face expansive views toward the Magillycuddyreeks and Macklaun, suggesting the maker chose a place where the sky and land could be read together.
By the W side of the road leading towards Neesha, the upper surface (c.2m high) at S of what may originally have been one large boulder, now split into about four parts, is inscribed with rock art. It consists of cup-and-ring variations, cupmarks, lines of picking and a basin enclosed by a ring. The rock art is not readily visible in flat light. Expansive views in all directions including the Magillycuddyreeks at E and Macklaun to SW. Compiled by: Aoibheann Lambe Date of upload/revision: 8 March 2022
